My Project

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, with nearly 90% of our population qualifying for free or reduced lunch, prior to the nationwide free lunch program. Our multicultural make-up is extensively diverse. Our student body is made up over 600 children, which is quite large in a K-5 building, with over 1/3 of our population who are non-English speaking.

A couple of colleagues and I are currently working with a group of 4th and 5th grade students at our school regarding entrepreneurships.

The students have been proposing various companies in regards to solving problems in which they face. The idea that the group has agreed upon is "Positive Pencils." This endeavor would help solve multiple issues that the children have identified. First problem recognized was the students' continuous search for pencils throughout the day while they are in school. In addition to solving the material issue, the students also made notice of the struggle with mindset amongst our students. As educators, we embed a philosophy of developing an open mindset through lessons and activities across our curriculum. With that, the thought of designing pencils with encouraging statements would support the solution of two problems, providing a plethora of writing utensils at the fingertips of our student body that would benefit the motivation and support of developing an open mindset.

The students plan to utilize these pencils as a positive reminder of support to peers, celebrating everyone's potential for growth. Please consider aiding to support our "Urban Up lifters" with their recently designed endeavor!
