My Students
My students are in an urban vocational high school. They range in ability levels, language fluency, and unique learning needs. My school offers different pathways for students that include: welding, automotive, diesel, building construction, CNC machine operating, and CADD. My students are hardworking, kind, and motivated to seek employment during and after high school in their chosen field of study.
Being a teenager comes with its own sets of challenges, but my students face so many more obstacles than that.
Many of the students I teach come from difficult home situations and financial hardships, all while trying to obtain and complete internships at shops in their trades. They have overcome many challenges. Despite these obstacles, they are a joy to teach and I couldn't ask for a better group of students.
My Project
This project is for a class set of the modern American novel entitled "Dear Martin." The novel has a teen protagonist, who happens to be a minority, that my urban students can relate to. Set in the inner city, the main character faces issues of race, coming of age, injustice, and much more. These are issues that my students face as well.
Urban minorities need more books with characters that feel authentic and realistic.
This captivates their interest and motivates them to continue reading--fostering a love of literacy. The novel incorporates historical context and figures, such as civil rights issues as well as the notable Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. My students will learn so much about history, theme, and characterization from this novel. Please help us grow in literacy!
