Most of my students are fairly new to the United States of America, and at least half of them are 9th graders who are new to high school. Their common theme is change, which is something they have experienced to a large extent. These novels will allow us to have a shared cultural literary experience--one where we can study character development, plot, and theme. Most importantly, these novels are interesting and contain adolescent themes that are cross-cultural, thus improving the English language proficiency of my students. These novels will provide my students with more opportunities to discuss, converse, and debate with classmates, which is an integral part of the English as a Second Language curriculum.
