My Students

This project will benefit approximately 95, 11th grade English students in my diverse, urban classroom. Coming from all cultures and walks of life, they are curious, lively, smart and unbelievably motivated young people. I really want to put good, relatable literature in their hands.

Students in this culturally/racially diverse class vary from reading and processing at college levels, to those still learning the English language and needing a lot of comprehension support, to those with special needs.

This class teaches them how to read, analyze, reason and then write about their thoughts. A common text to spark conversation is crucial to their success.

With regular practice of critical reading, thinking and discussion, it is amazing to see how students open up, discover how smart they are and learn how to express themselves intellectually. Literature like this teaches history, human thought and reasoning and exposes students to different perspectives and ways of life. They love it. I do too. Any help you can give is deeply appreciated.

My Project

Trevor Noah is a bi-racial author from South Africa that our students need to read. He's intelligent, funny, engaging and overcame great odds to achieve success. So far, we have collected are 60 books and need more. Please help me bridge this gap in basic learning materials. Minneapolis is returning to in-person school after a long time of online learning, and I really want a high interest, thought provoking story to get students thinking critically.

Class conversations about this book will be amazing: "Born a Crime" exposes students to a great author who writes about growing up in a highly segregated, race-conscious world.

My diverse students (more than half students of color), need to experience authors that reflect their cultures and skin color.

Noah has a written a thought-provoking, discussion worthy book that will help my students engage, think and write. This is not a glamorous project, but it's about books and literacy. Books are what we need. We appreciate any assistance you could provide.
