This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At UHMS, our newly formed chess club has rapidly become a hub of excitement and talent, attracting students eager to explore the strategic world of chess. We are requesting funding for chess sets, clocks, and a demonstration set to enable our students to learn, practice and play chess as we prepare to participate in chess tournaments.

Our primary goal is to participate in our very first scholastic chess tournament.

This experience will provide our students with a platform to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. We aim to build a supportive community where students can thrive intellectually and socially, fostering a sense of achievement and belonging. Through competition, we also hope to instill a sense of discipline and enhance their ability to think critically and make swift, effective decisions.

Chess sets and clocks are essential tools for our club. Quality chess sets will provide a tactile learning experience, helping students understand game dynamics and improve spatial reasoning. Chess clocks will introduce students to tournament settings, teaching them how to think strategically under time constraints. These resources will not only enhance their learning of the game but also develop skills in critical thinking, patience, and sportsmanship.

Our students are a diverse group with a common passion for chess. Despite being at the beginning of their chess journey, they show remarkable dedication and a natural aptitude for the game. Their willingness to learn and improve is a testament to the vibrant spirit of our urban school community. They represent the potential not only to excel in chess but to use these skills in enhancing their academic and personal lives.
