Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 24 energetic and eager to learn students. This year, I would like to teach my students about sustainability, life cycles and beautification of our campus.
I will be teaching 24 curious 2nd graders in a high poverty school in south Los Angeles.
The majority of the students live in apartment complexes or multi-family homes. There is one small park in the neighborhood and no community garden. There is very little vegetation, constant traffic, and pollution in the neighborhood.
It's imperative that I make sure they learn sustainable gardening. I would love for my students to keep a garden that consist of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in order for them to understand how to grow a garden that works in harmony with nature.
My Project
My second grade students attend an inner city school with limited experiences due to their socioeconomic status. The bags of soil, seeds and pots will help my students garden.
I will use the materials to continue building our school garden and have a class garden.
As of now, there is a small area underneath a staircase where we have started a garden for the students to take care of. All of the materials will help my students not only learn about responsibility by taking care of plants but it will also help in the teaching of writing, math and science.
Donations to this project will allow my students to plant seeds, observe the plant life cycle, harvest, and enjoy the rewards of gardening.
During the growing process I will have my students complete hands-on activities that will teach them the importance of sustainability. Students will have a firsthand experience with growing things that they can eat and share their experiences with their families.
