Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine coming to school each day after working all night to help your family put food on the table? Or sitting in a classroom trying to focus when you've been up since 4am getting your siblings ready for school? My amazing students often have these struggles and more and they come to our diverse high school with a strong desire to learn and the drive to overcome any obstacles on their track for success. They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions and hold their attention! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. By planning, building, & maintaining a community garden, my students will be able to learn biology, horticulture, urban planning, cooking & healthy eating, responsibility, and how they have the power to creat something to help the local community! Truly, they are my inspiration!
My Project
Students will learn about plants while they build and develop a community garden to share with our neighbors! These tools will help them til the soil, grow the plants, and eventually work along side our community members. We will be able to plant seeds and watch them turn into food and explore what nature can create. Also, it will help them learn to grow food so that in the future, they will grow beans and cucumbers in their yard to make sure there is always healthy food available! Students will be hands on, digging in the dirt like urban farmers and learning while they learn what goes into gardening! These tools will allow them to get their hands dirty- planting the seeds, digging the soil, and eventually sharing these tools with the community members who want to garden a section. We need a safe place to store our tools, enough tools for a class to work, and your help to make this all happen!
