Urban Classroom Farming

Help me give my students Hydroponics kits and pots and soil for a garden experience in our classroom to bring a little farm to our urban school.

My Project

Earlier this year, our science class grew some beans, and for many students, it was the first time they had ever planted anything. They were fascinated by the progress of the plants. But after the experiment was over, we moved on to the next project. We lost the magic I'd like to extend this project, to make it a little "meatier", by having students grow vegetables that we can consume, right here in the classroom, all year round.

By introducing students to growing their own food, my co-teacher and I want to help students get closer to the earth, something that's really hard to do in the middle of a city.

My hope is to help introduce students to urban farming and to connect them to a city farm. This project could open doors to make environmental issues more concrete, to open paths to agricultural careers that students who have lived in the city all their lives have never considered, and to help them consider where their food comes from. We will start by growing a salad and, if students are interested, start our own farm stand here in school. For our English learners, it opens doors to try to expand vocabulary, to explain to others our procedures and learning.
