Upstream Arts for Social and Communication Learning

My Students

Our students in the Developmental Cognitive Disabilities (DCD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) classes are a diverse group. Over 60% of the students in these classrooms are English Language Learners whose home languages are Somali or Spanish. Almost half of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Our students’ abilities and needs vary widely.

While some students are non-verbal and use picture symbols or speech generating devices to express themselves, others are able to speak in complete sentences and engage in conversations.

Several students use wheelchairs to navigate the school. Communication and social skills are areas of growth for all of our students.

My Project

This project will bring a team of three teaching artists to our school to lead cooperative arts lessons. While students are enjoying activities incorporating theater, music, dance, poetry and visual arts, they will also be practicing important skills like identifying their emotions, taking turns, attending to non-verbal communication, and negotiating conflicts.

Upstream Arts is innovative in its use of arts based strategies to teach social, emotional, and communication skills to students with a wide range of disabilities.

We will build on Upstream Arts innovative approach, inviting several general education students to join our class in order to give students additional opportunities to develop and strengthen peer relationships.
