My Students

"What do they think of me?" "When will I fit in?" "When will I feel safe?" Many of my students ask themselves these questions every day as they enter school. Many of them are confronted with issues of bullying that make their middle school lives difficult if not painful.

My 6th grade students are at a point in their lives when they are becoming more independent, forming their own identities, and trying to find their place in this world.

Unfortunately, as they begin to spread their wings, they are often faced with bullying from their peers on top of systemic prejudices that already exist against them (Our population is 99% Hispanic and 99% of our students receive free and reduced lunch). On a survey conducted by our school's civic learning club, approximately 60% of our middle school students reported not knowing who to talk to about problems like bullying and depression. However, I have seen how compelled my students are to try and change that narrative. They want to better understand how to stand up for themselves and others, how to be community builders, and how to become healthier human beings.

My Project

We have been working with "Facing History" curricula this year, which have helped us to delve into historical narratives of oppression and social justice. By going to see the film "Bully," my students will be able to witness the dire consequences of bullying in schools and further understand the power of words and actions. They will see the pain that words and actions can induce, but they will also be able to see the community and love that words and actions can build. I hope that seeing this film will encourage my students to speak about their own experiences with bullying, and even reflect on the times when they themselves were the bullies. Through follow-up discussions, journaling activities, and readings of other narratives, my students will be able to consider the variety of ways that they can respond to bullying as well as other forms of conflict in and out of school. This project will impact over 250 students, turning many of them from bystanders into upstanders.

While our school does a wonderful job supporting student socio-emotional needs through many extracurricular activities, my 6th grade students would benefit tremendously from an experience where they will be confronted with emotional and thought-provoking bullying narratives.

As our 6th graders are transitioning into 7th, they need to learn how to build empathy for those whom they might have otherwise victimized. The film will help bring reflection into action.
