My 6th grade students are at a point in their lives when they are becoming more independent, forming their own identities, and trying to find their place in this world. Unfortunately, as they begin to spread their wings, they are often faced with bullying from their peers on top of systemic prejudices that already exist against them (Our population is 99% Hispanic and 99% of our students receive free and reduced lunch). On a survey conducted by our school's civic learning club, approximately 60% of our middle school students reported not knowing who to talk to about problems like bullying and depression. However, I have seen how compelled my students are to try and change that narrative. They want to better understand how to stand up for themselves and others, how to be community builders, and how to become healthier human beings.
