This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have two groups of dual language immersion students, 50 in total. Half the day they learn in English and the other half they learn in Spanish. They switch classes halfway through the day. I teach the Spanish side and about 40% of my students are ELL or have parent(s) of hispanic descent. The majority of my students have been in the program for 4 years now, since kindergarten.
Many of my students are right at grade level for reading or even above grade level, but unfortunately I only have lower level reading books for them to take home.
My students want a challenge!
My Project
Many of my students have been complaining that the books they take home are "too easy" -- and many of them are right! I have been given from the previous 3rd grade teacher before me many great books in Spanish. Unfortunately, the highest leveled readers I have is a Level H and I have many students who could easily be taking home Level N books. I do not have any higher levels. These books would enrich my students' at-home reading in Spanish and give them the challenge that they need! It is really hard to get access to such rich literature in SPANISH!
More than a third of students from low‑income households
