For the past 51 years (that’s not a typo!) I have had the privilege of teaching at the same school in the farming community of East Bernard, Texas . . . population of about 2,200. Over my many years as an educator, I have had the privilege of meeting some really bright and energetic students, and this year is just the same. Their little minds are like sponges, and their willingness to learn and explore new concepts keeps me constantly searching for new ways to excite and challenge them while incorporating some of my learnings over the years. I want to be able to satisfy their thirst for knowledge! Because our community is small everyone takes pride in taking care of each other.
Last year, Hurricane Harvey made a big impact on our small town; through donation drives, makeshift work crews, and food deliveries, we saw our town come together in a big way, but unfortunately, it has drained extra resources.
My Project
As you can imagine, over the years, the landscape of teaching and teaching tools has changed drastically. I have seen us move from chalkboards to Promethean boards and everything in between. Trying to keep up with the latest technology is a necessity but can also be cost prohibited for many classrooms. Given this, I would like to use the iPads and Osmos to upgrade my technology offerings to my students. By allowing my students’ daily access to these iPad devices, I would be allowing them to stretch their minds all the while becoming more comfortable with technology. Moreover, due to the flexibility of the iPads, I can use these devices to modify my teachings to meet my student where they are academically. . . I can use this technology for those that might need little additional assistance or push those that are excelling.
The beauty of the iPads is that it relieves me of having to sit one on one with my students; it frees my time to be able to further focus on other areas of need or development in my classroom.
Lastly, I would also use these iPads during my center time. I would create a center dedicated for the use of the iPads and Osmos. Here the students would learn through the use of this interactive Osmos technology and experience things such a spatial and visual problem solving skills. They would also have the ability to strengthen their social and team- working skills. However the biggest plus of all is that my students would be learning, BUT having fun at at the same time! This is every teachers dream!
