This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are in a high poverty area, which means our entire school population receives free lunch. The students within the school range from four years old all the way up to the 8th grade.
We are a public Montessori school with a major focus on social and emotional learning and growth.
We also have a focus on teaching about greater diversity in the world. Our major focus this year and in the years to come is racial equity and helping our students of color use their voices to speak out against injustice.
My Project
The knobbed cylinders help to teach my pre-k how to use the pincer grip in preparation for using a pencil and writing. With my Pre-k and Kinder students, it also teaches them the quantity of ten, and comparing length and width.
The wooden trays help to keep this organized in our language area of the classroom.
The wooden trays hold our sandpaper letters and objects. The objects all begin with the sounds shown on the sandpaper letters. This is for the children to sort the objects by their beginning sound. The wooden trays help to keep this organized in our language area of the classroom.
