My Students

We have a wonderful group of students who need a place on campus, a middle school serving approximately 700 seventh and eighth-grade students of whom nearly 25% have parents who serve in the military.

Our collection of classic books is old and uninviting and needs an upgrade to attract readers.

One group of readers I have difficulty finding high Lexile, age-appropriate books for is our advanced high school and college-level readers. Often books at advanced reading levels are too mature for middle school students, so I refer them to the classics. All libraries have the classics. Our library's collection of classics is old, musty-smelling, and uninviting. I need to update and expand the collection so when I hand a student a classic, it is a new book.

My Project

Classics appeal to all readers, but they may not know it. While shopping, I discovered graphic novels of classic titles. Students will love these books.

I often refer students who have high reading levels to the classics because they are often age-appropriate for middle schoolers. When parents ask me for recommendations, I have a list of books but feel a little embarrassed when I pull out a book that has been on the shelf for years and smells a bit musty.
