This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Nestled in a historical school building, in the heart of the mid-south, is where you will find students with a passion for academic achievement coupled with a love for the Performing Arts, such as Orff Music, Creative Arts, Drama, and Dance. In the heart of hearts of these talented readers and thinkers is their love for spending time in the school’s library. My students enthusiastically enter the library ready to check-out books, work in library centers, and use the computers for researching.
My students are creative, intuitive, thrill seekers that anticipates immersing their minds in books that take them on adventures, hold them captive with mysteries, as well as nonfiction texts that fill their minds with up-to-date information needed to complete their latest class research projects.
My school is a public title-one school with 262 students in grades prekindergarten through fifth grade. As the librarian I have instilled a passion for reading in my students. My student’s display their passion for reading when the books they have eagerly waited on become available for them to check-out as well as in their disappointed faces when a book is not available or damaged beyond repair.
My Project
The books I selected will be a welcomed library resource. My students enter the library enthusiastically anticipating getting their hands on good books to read. Due to our school's small library book budget I can only order approximately thirty new library books per year. Adding these new books to our collection will increase my students pride in our school's library. My students will no longer be disappointed when they come to the library to check out a book only to find out that it's been weeded from our library collection due to over use. Students will check-out the selected books added to the library collection for personal enjoyment.
My eager thinkers and readers will have access to new books that will definitely put a smile on their face .
My students’ academic grades in English language arts will increase as well as their joy for reading as they become lifelong learners and users of library materials and resources.
