My Students

Help my students understand what's happening outside the walls of our classroom. A textbook can only tell them so much about the real world. My students need the most up to date information about world issues, politics and news.

My students come from some of the most struggling families and neighborhoods in Connecticut.

Their backgrounds have not provided them with the skills they need to access newspaper articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. But my students still need to know what's going on in the world. Upfront Magazine and TIME for Kids will give my students access to real world issues and build their literacy skills along the way.

My Project

As we jump into a unit on "World Issues," my students and I are excited to learn about some of the most pressing issues of our time: genocide, AIDS, and child soldiers in Africa; women's rights, religious conflict, and war in the Middle East. These are the things my students may have been given a glimpse of before, but have not yet studied in depth. Upfront Magazine and Around The World TIME for Kids provide students with up-to-date and accessible information that builds their confidence while they read and improves their literacy skills.

My students know that there is a lot going on in this world outside the walls of our classroom, but they haven't been given a means to access the information they need.

I am so excited to see the discussions that will come from the news stories my students will be studying.
