First of all, a bit about my new group of 6th graders. This group has been through a lot as they spent 4th grade online.
They are as squirrelly as you’d expect, but they are also eager and funny.
They are creative and dedicated to adapting to the increased rigor and responsibility of middle school. I am so lucky to get to know them and I look forward to all the challenges and successes this year will bring!
Due to the online year and the expansion of the world language department, we are in need of an extension of the curriculum we have. We had been using roughly the same units across 6th, 7th and 8th for the past two years but our students are ready to go beyond. This is very exciting for us as a department! We are asking for support in purchasing a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card that will go directly to the purchasing of expanded curriculum.
This curriculum will challenge students, while also building on the knowledge they already have. By expanding this curriculum, students will be familiar with the process and structure of the units. Additionally, teachers will be familiar with it which makes a big difference when teaching. Students read stories and make sense of new vocabulary with context and cognates. This curriculum weaves in cultural topics and class conversation so students are repeatedly given language they can understand also known as comprehensible input. There are fun activities such as a choose your own adventure story for each unit and games that use the vocabulary. There are also assessments, entry tasks, and video talks. We have seen the effectiveness of this curriculum, SOMOS, and we know these expanded units will continue to support our students’ growth in Spanish language!
