Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title One school in Los Angeles, CA. My fourth graders are vibrant, funny, intelligent students. They are passionate about exploring the world around them and have aspirations to graduate from high school and go on to four-year colleges and universities.
My school has recently been pursuing an engineering focus in an effort to have students practice perseverance and working through challenges.
It has changed these students into scholars that approach obstacles with grit and determination.
My students (and I) love to read and are constantly seeking out new and different reading material. They particularly like books about animals, mysteries, and graphic novels
My Project
As a first year teacher, the classroom library that I am currently able to offer my fourth graders has a rather outdated selection of books. We have started the year with discussions regarding the importance of reading, as well as the captivation one can have when they find a book of interest, at the right reading level.
Needless to say, these kids are already hooked- I can't get them to put their books down.
After taking a survey and observing my students, I have noticed that this group is drawn to graphic novels like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. My current classroom library only has a small handful of graphic novels, so I would love to be able to stock my shelves with these. I have also asked for award winning books that will challenge and expand the minds of my students. Thank you so much for helping to foster a love of reading in these fourth grade students!
