My Students

I believe that the library is the heart of the school! It is a space for students to come every week to checkout books. It's also a space that is increasingly used for MakerSpaces, research projects and technology training. Having a few laptops will make this possible.

S Elementary is a small community-based school in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC.

Forty-five percent of our students are English language learners from around the world and most of our students are eligible for reduced-price or free meals. Our students come from the Ukraine and El Salvador, Ethiopia and China and each bring their rich cultural experiences with them. We offer a warm and loving learning environment where students are encouraged to discover their potential and embrace new experiences.

My Project

This year we working on identifying and solving real world problems by applying the knowledge they are acquiring. Having computers will give these students a chance to move away from obsolete research books and dive headfirst into 21st Century learning. Technology helps me provide students with opportunities to practice their teamwork, problem solving and research skills. Our first grade team helped our students gather data from biographies, write down their findings, and make a poster to present their findings to their classmates. If we had computers, these students could have read the e-books, watched a video, and written their paragraphs. Pictorial guides, like video biographies, help our English language learner students. A secondary outcome of using laptops is having the ability to incorporate technology instruction into every project. These are essential skills to being information literate in the 21st century.
