My classroom is full of 6th graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, I have a diverse group of learners. I have students functioning well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students functioning well above grade level. I have students who have a passion for learning and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
My number one goal for this project is for my students to be exited to read and be engaged in the reading process. I want my students to fall in love with reading; I want them to be lifelong readers. I want them to be lifelong readers because I want my students to reap the benefits of being a reader. In Donalyn Miller’s book, Reading in the Wild, she shares the research based benefits of being a reader. Some of the benefits include:
• Readers are the most successful in school.
• Readers succeed in the workforce.
• Reading is linked to a higher chance of attending college.
• Regular reading boosts a person’s social and civic sense (they are better citizens).
At the beginning of this school year I looked at my classroom library and concluded it was necessary to clean out the "junk". After I cleared the junk I really saw the need to update the library with current titles that would attract my students. When a student chooses a book from our library I want them to love the book and ask for more. We are in serious need of an update.
