My Project
As a black educator who works primarily with black and brown students, it is such a privilege to be able to see them in their element and experience those "lightbulb" moments where they understand key concepts. However, I recognize that the challenges my students face are disproportionately higher than those of their white counterparts. If I can make students feel more comfortable and safe, I will do everything in my power to make that happen.
Black and Brown students deserve to experience liberatory education in every sense of the word.
In particular, the clipboards, bean bags, and stools will allow my students to experience flexible seating, which will support all students, but particularly those with disabilities that impact their focus and attention.
In addition, the other items on the list, such as the pencils, folders, notebooks, and drawers, and labels will make it easier for me to keep up with the supplies student need in the classroom and will also support me in having to share my classroom with other colleagues given that there is not currently the right infrastructure in my classroom to keep things organized in a shared classroom space. The moving cart will be especially helpful as I prepare for classes on a daily basis and keep items available and visibly to students.
In conclusion, these items will serve my students in a tremendous way. Our current educational landscape is not doing enough to open the possibilities up for black and brown students, and these items will help me to do that. By challenging student's assumptions about how they should learn in a classroom, I will also be challenging their assumptions about where they learn and how much they "deserve" to accomplish.
