My Students
Our school is in one of the most diverse districts in the state of Missouri. We provide rigorous academics, dedicated teachers, and a safe learning environment for students of many different backgrounds, cultures, and socioeconomic levels; throughout the day I get to touch the lives of 150 of these students.
I teach in a school district where nearly all of my students receive free/reduced-price lunch and need additional resources to be successful.
Many of our students experience trauma and some even experience homelessness. Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day ready to start fresh and even give back taking on projects with a focus on environmental issues, community outreach, and gender equality in the field of engineering.
I strive to provide my students with challenges that will make a difference in their lives and others regardless of their needs or ability. By doing so, I hope to inspire these students to be prepared for successful and conscientious futures.
My Project
This project is focused on keeping students' minds creative over the summer. Students have been asked to recycle and reuse materials. They are to collect items that can be reused such as plastic water bottles, plastic trash bags, plastic caps, crayons, and shirts or shoes they don't wear anymore. They are then to think about ways these materials could be made in a new and creative way.
Students will design and create the new items from these upcycled materials they collect when school resumes in the fall.
The challenge has been that some of the materials need additional tools such as jewelry wire, rings, and glue. The Clover MCI-900 Mini Iron will be used to update old clothing and shoes with new designs. The crayons collected will be made into newly shaped and colorful candles.
Hopefully, this project will give young minds creative ideas of ways to reuse some of our everyday materials instead of throwing them away!
