Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I spent this spring in distance learning and we are starting the coming year in distance learning as well. My students and I are separated by sickness, uncertainty and space; at the same time, we are united by our love, our history together and our dedication to learning. In many ways distance learning has been a struggle for my students; they are dealing with confined learning spaces, uncertain living environments and inequitable access to resources.
We are living through history.
My students are incredible people. They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. We work hard every day as scholars, artists, critical thinkers, and friends.
My Project
Katherine Johnson. Sally Ride. Maria Winklemann. Dorothy Vaughn. Alice Ball. Grace Hopper. These are the women that I want my students to feel inspired by. My students are the scientists, inventors, lawyers, dentists and senators of the future. Every day I am inspired by their passion, compassion and joy. Along with the strong and amazing women portrayed on the IF/THEN digital library of diverse women in STEM, my students and I will be reading books and anthologies together.
My students are incredible people--I am thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce them to inspiring and innovative women.
I have asked for several books of women in science, particularly astronomy, that I will share throughout the year. I have also asked for a class set of an awesome interactive book, "Escape This Book! Race to the Moon." We will complete this book together (even while apart during Distance Learning) and be inspired to change our world. Thank you for considering this project!
