My Students
Everyday we celebrate what a diverse and dynamic group of learners we are. Our school borders the inner city and the international district. We draw from both sides and are thereby enriched. Many of our families have attended for generations and we also welcome new families from around the world.
Our school community is very strong.
We are creative and energetic. We love art, music, and learning. Our families and our staff support the students in a environment of rigor and empowerment. With this being true, we still struggle at times. Many families are restricted by extreme work schedules and by different aspects of poverty and so are not able to give our school financial or volunteer support. We get baseline funding from the school district but cannot maintain a PTA. All of our extras come from outside supporters. There is sooo much we want to do but we do need need help. The potential is amazing. The more tools we have the more creative we can be. Engagement in school at this early age is one of the key indicators of success in later years so that is one of our goals.
My Project
I am going to be honest. In my classroom we do have some dedicated computers and our building does have a pool of iPads that we can access. The problem is that they do not belong to us. If we had our own in our classroom, we could do so much more. A practical benefit is that having 2 more would make it possible to set them up as a learning center. 6 is much better than 4. It also will make it easier for volunteers to help track student progress effectively. Boring. Here are some more interesting ideas. We want to take the iPads on field trips and document our learning. We want to be able to install and use our own apps instead begging permission to have someone else put them on shared machines. It also is a great opportunity for reluctant readers to have interactive texts to work with. We want to research on the Internet and then record interviews with experts as primary sources for our reports. We could make live action book trailers! If we have our own iPads in our classroom we can do this. Stand back and watch us.
Of course it is my goal to make my students fluent and successful in math, reading, and writing.
It is cliche and a little bit sad but computers are the future and a major part of preparing students for the workforce. Knowing that, technology has become an equity issue. Many of our families do not own computers. The only access they have is at the public library or in schools. I want my students to have early exposure and a fluency with technology so that they are not denied any opportunities.
