Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
'Eager to learn' is the best way to describe our third graders! We are a multi-ethnic population with second language learners, special education, fostered students, and a very wide range of academic skill levels. Nearly all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our students often have limited enriching family day trips due to the travel and expense barriers that arise from living in a remote desert community.
Our geography separates us from more populated regions. We are surrounded on three sides by an expansive desert and a substantial mountain pass on the fourth. Because of our location, most parents have to make long commutes to work, or work several jobs and/or at unusual hours. This means that a supportive, enriching school experience is all the more important.
Our school is the largest in our elementary district with over 1,100 students in grades Pre-K through sixth. Increasingly, our parent population is becoming active in school volunteer work. Our district and site host events several times each year for parent learning and fun family activities. We also have a new Parent Resource Center just to provide parent support!
My Project
Although our school district is grades K-6, it boasts a formal, year-long careers program for students beginning in grade 3. It is intended to promote career discussion and projects for students, who, often due to socio-economic circumstances, have very little career exposure.
In the Deep Space Network Visitor's Center, students will learn first-hand how NASA communicates with spacecraft exploring our Solar System - looking at current robotics missions!
They will be up close to equipment, view images, and learn how NASA cooperates with agencies in other parts of the world.
Students tour deep space exhibits up close - including an on-site space suit for photos. Classroom discovery activities done in advance and as follow-up are designed to increase student understanding and inspire them to consider an unusual career field.
