My Students

Do you remember the frustration of being in a group or class and not being able to see the presentation? You hear the oohs and ahhhs of others, but strain to see what is going on. First graders respond with, "I can't see!" "Show me again."or "It's too small!" Please help me solve this problem!

I have an awesome class of energetic, active six and seven year old students who thrive on an interactive environment.

Our school is a very high performing school in a large urban district that also has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. However, our school does not receive Title I funds that most of the schools receive. We do have fabulous school with a "family" atmosphere and parents that are actively involved in supporting the school and raising money for the teachers and essential classroom supplies. All students come from various backgrounds and each has a unique learning style.

My Project

A document camera is the solution to our problem! This wonderful technology is compatible with the SmartBoards we received this school year. What makes the document camera so cool is its versatility. Anything that I want all the students to see from a picture in a book to an observation of a rock, can be easily shown with the help of the document camera and SmartBoard. The average attention span of a 1st grade student is about 6 -7 minutes. So, if I am teaching whole group and trying to demonstrate how to play a game, show how to use manipulatives for a math activity, how to complete a writing activity, or show a picture in a book, the students that are not in the front are not able to see as well. Therefore, their attention will go to other things. The document camera will be such an asset in the classroom and save valuable instructional time. Students can be actively engaged participating and all students can actually see. No more "Teacher, I can't see!".

In order to set a strong foundation for 1st grade students I want to teach to all the learning styles of the students.

Research has shown that 65% of the population are visual learners. The document camera is an amazing technological tool that will allow all students the opportunity to actually see up close and personal the images. Information presented in this way is easily remembered. Please help me get a document camera to help all my 23 1st graders this year and all my future students.
