My Project

I have been a reading specialist for twenty-three years. As an educator, I have always felt the need to continue to seek out professional development that will give me the tools and knowledge I need to help my students to become confident readers.

The Orton-Gillingham approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling do not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.

In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, this approach is a powerful instructional tool.

The Orton-Gillingham approach is most often associated with one-on-one and small-group instruction. The OG approach always is focused on the learning needs of the individual student. Orton-Gillingham practitioners design lessons and materials to work with students at the level they present by pacing instruction and introducing new materials to their individual strengths and weaknesses.

In this project, I have requested the professional development I will need to become an experienced and certified Orton-Gillingham practitioner. The Assessment/Planning Session, Certified Observations, and Certified Classes will allow me to gain the expertise needed to help my most struggling readers succeed. This training will allow me to provide the systematic and sequential instruction needed for my most struggling readers to become confident and successful.
