My Students

My classroom consists of students from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our charter high school provides an opportunity for children from local and neighboring towns to earn a valuable education and prepare them for life after high school. With 23% of my students being gifted and talented and 24% of my students having free and reduced lunch, it is hard to accommodate them on such limited resources. Whether students are entering the work force, military, or college, we have high expectations in all that they do.

My biology students are eager to learn, but sometimes have difficulty understanding the complicated processes of cells and genetics.

It is my intent that by introducing the novel, "Mercies in Disguise" by Gina Kolata, students will better understand and relate to science from a true story about a local family.

In addition to promoting real-world connections, my students will gain literacy skills. Many science textbooks can be daunting and overwhelming to read, and it is imperative they learn that reading in science can be fun. It is my hope that some of these students will be inspired to explore the endless opportunities that make-up STEM careers.

My Project

Trying to make genetics meaningful to my students can often be challenging. This past summer, I discovered the book "Mercies in Disguise," a true story of a South Carolina family's struggle with a rare and deadly inherited disease. The book not only brings science to life, but holds deep ethical questions for students to ponder and discuss in the classroom.

I want my students to become scientifically literate so they are able to understand what is going on in the world around them and hopefully enjoy reading in the process.

This set of books will remain in the classroom to serve multiple classes and to ensure that each student has an opportunity to read. During our DNA and Genetics related units, students will be given time at the beginning of class to read. Chapter questions will be provided to help guide daily reading, promote critical thinking, and promote lively classroom discussions. The reading project will culminate with a hands-on lab investigation with a mobile genetics laboratory.

With the help of your donations my students will gain a perspective on why science is important outside of the classroom and how it can changes lives.
