This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students attend a school in Brooklyn, NY that receives Title 1 funding (most of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch because of their household income). Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. During the pandemic, we worked hard to give out as many laptops, Chromebooks, and iPads as we could, but many students share devices at home. We are engaging in remote learning fully right now, and the fall semester is likely going to engage in some amount of remote learning.
Our school believes in inclusion and includes our students with IEPs and our English Language Learners in all of our classes.
This allows for diverse classrooms with all types of learners in the same room, taking the same class.
All of our students take AP Language and Composition in 11th grade.
My Project
After reading "Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You" by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds, I knew I had to read it with my students. This book pushes back on the white-centric telling of US History by giving multiple perspectives and analyzing events throughout history. This book not only helps young people understand the significance of historical events, but it clearly shows how the past impacts the present.
This text will inspire young people to become antiracists and engage in important work and conversations about race in the United States.
I aspire to have an antiracist curriculum, and having enough copies of this text for students to take home and read will help start the school year. It will create a foundation that we will be able to build on all year.
It's especially important to have physical books during this time of remote learning because students are spending most of their day looking at screens. Having a break from the screen and being able to engage in a physical text is essential for their wellbeing.
