This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their boundless creativity, eagerness to learn, and the excitement they bring to every project. They are curious, open-minded, and thrive when given opportunities to explore their identities and the world beyond themselves. Our ceramics program continues to grow each year, with more students enrolling because of the engaging, hands-on projects we offer—projects that challenge them artistically while helping them connect with deeper cultural themes.

This mask-making project invites students to explore their own heritage and research other cultures to draw design inspiration.

Using clay, they will sculpt masks that reflect cultural symbolism, stories, and artistic traditions. After bisque firing, students will bring their masks to life through color and detail using acrylic paints or watercolor underglazes, depending on the aesthetic required for the cultural references they’ve chosen.

The requested materials—acrylic paints and watercolor underglazes—are essential to completing this project. They allow students to fully realize their creative visions and give their masks a vibrant, meaningful finish. These resources support not only artistic expression but also cultural understanding and pride, helping students build empathy and appreciation for the diverse world around them.
