My students need visual and tactile materials such as Alphabet Playdough Mats, Pattern Blocks, Language Photo Cards, Magnetic Letters, Story Telling Cards, and an Abacus.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are an exceptional group of learners who are educated in an Inclusion Model and receive Learning Support services inside and outside of the general education classroom. They are comprised of Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders who experience developmental delays 2-3 years below grade level.
Through differentiated instruction, I aim to provide my students with meaningful lessons and hands-on activities that influence their cognitive and behavioral development.
Unfortunately, funding shortages within our district make it difficult to purchase items necessary for students to visualize and manipulate materials that reinforce academic and social concepts.
My Project
My project requires literacy and math manipulatives for the creation of Task Boxes. Task boxes are designed for beginner learners who are working on identifying letters and numbers, in addition to students who are developing phonemic and math awareness. In order to create such boxes, my students need Dab and Dot Markers, Alphamagnets, Snap Sight Word Cards, wooden beads and other literacy and math manipulatives. My students will use Task Boxes within the context of structured work sessions.
When used appropriately, task boxes may reduce the number of potential distractions and encourage students to focus on the intended purpose of the activity.
Additionally, the use of task boxes fosters independence when students develop the skills necessary to complete the task.
