My Students
The students at my middle school are some of the most dynamic people I've ever met. They come from many different backgrounds, so everyone has experiences to share. Many countries of origin are represented in our school, which makes it very much like the real world. We are a STEAM school and much focus is given to problem solving. The experiences the students bring to the table make collaboration and cooperation for projects even more beneficial.
Though most of our students live in highest poverty, 91.8%, you would not know that by talking to them.
Our students exhibit a self-pride based on knowledge, compassion, and ability to make a difference in their worlds. For many, they will be the first generation for college, and they take that honor very seriously. I would not consider working anywhere else. The students here make us all better people.
My Project
Because of the diversity of our students and the level of poverty into which they were born, academic reading can be a struggle. This is not acceptable barrier for us. The students find ancient history to be quite an abstract concept and cannot always identify which historical figures. With the introduction of a fictional favorite, The Egypt Game, the historical content of social studies class will become more connected, more realistic, and more attainable.
Middle school students still retain that sense of imagination that makes them inquisitive and creative.
The knowledge they will gain through the unit of study will stay with them far beyond the classroom. Our school vision is to create lifelong learners and innovators. This can be just one more rich experience to reach that goal.
