My Students
My students are magical. They enter the classroom each day with great attitudes and eager minds.
My students attend an extraordinary school that focuses on project-based learning.
As the saying goes, they learn best by doing. I believe that each child in my class brings something to the table and that project-based learning is the best method for highlighting their contributions.
My Project
The materials in this project are associated with our Explorer Trading Card project. Students begin my researching The Age of Exploration. I'd like to replace our text book with a class set of, The World Made New, which is included in this project. It is a wonderful book that is both age-appropriate and high-interest. As far as middle grade informational texts go, this is top notch. Informative and fair, with great illustrations, glossary and biographical section. It focuses on both the key player and cultures during The Age of Exploration. Columbus and Tainos, Pizarro and Incas, Cortes and Aztecs. After creating their trading cards, students will use the meter sticks to create timelines, then plot the births, deaths and major accomplishments of each explorer. I will also distribute price guides and students will find the sum, range, mean, median and mode for all of their cards. They will use the calculators in this project to check each other's work.

My students will learn about The Age of Exploration and The Columbian Exchange, via the books and materials in this project. What's more important in human history? Learning about the Columbian Exchange will make them aware of the work in which they inhabit.
