Unlocking History: Bringing Artifacts to Life With a Digital Microscope
Help me give my students a digital microscope so they can explore the fine details of Native American pottery and artifacts, bringing history to life through hands-on investigation.

My Project
My 8th grade social studies students are naturally curious about the world around them—especially the past. We study ancient civilizations, Native American cultures, and early American history through artifacts, maps, and primary sources. But sometimes, the most fascinating details are too small to see with the naked eye. That’s where a digital microscope can truly transform our classroom.
A digital microscope will allow my students to zoom in and investigate historical artifacts like Native American pottery sherds, beads, tools, and other cultural remnants.
With this microscope, my students will be able to observe the composition of pottery materials, the textures and patterns used by different tribes, and the craftsmanship that went into every piece. These discoveries open up conversations about geography, trade, cultural identity, and the impact of natural resources on daily life.
By integrating technology into our social studies class, students will engage in hands-on historical inquiry. It brings history alive in a way that textbooks cannot. Instead of just reading about how something was made, students will analyze it themselves—developing critical thinking, observation skills, and a deeper respect for indigenous history and craftsmanship.
This microscope will give my students the opportunity to become young historians and archaeologists, connecting them more personally with the people of the past while enhancing 21st-century learning skills.
