My Project

I teacher Pre-k students and two things that they love are playing outside and creating art! In my classroom, I regularly incorporate process art. Process art focuses on a child’s creative experience and process. Process art projects are open ended. This means there is no specific end goal in mind. Instead, children work with tools and techniques as a means of exploration, rather than with the intention of creating a specific final product.

Bringing process art experiences outdoors is not only a fun opportunity, it is an ideal environment for fostering children’s creativity!

Having opportunities to do art outdoors creates an environment that says imagination, originality, and resourcefulness are valued!

There are many advantages to doing art outside. Here are a few:

1. Messiness is anticipated and OK. Paint spills and splatters are not as much of a concern in outdoor environments. Paint or chalk on ground surfaces or fences may be hosed off or left for rain to wash away or sun to fade.

2. Work surfaces are often large, allowing children to go big with their movements and create large-scale pieces of art.

3. Natural materials offer opportunities for children to create art anywhere. Children can go for a walk outside to collect their own nature items-leaves, seed pods, flowers, rocks, or sticks to use for designs.

4. Natural sunlight heightens colors, and nature provides young artists with inspiration.

The possibilities are endless! Using paints, inks, crayons, markers, etc. and natural materials (leaves, sticks, rocks, etc.) provides a unique opportunity for children to create, while interacting with nature in ways that they might not have experienced before. Please help me, help my students with art materials and clean-up materials to take our learning and creativity outside!
