High school is a challenging and exciting time. Students here are motivated to learn and cooperate with each other as a learning community. Often times helping each other along the way.
Students here come from very diverse backgrounds and love to express themselves.
Many of our students are learning English as a second language and as a result, sometimes struggle with the simpler things. On the other hand, there are also many students that are more than willing to help each other in a variety of ways. In my classroom, I have peer tutors that volunteer to help translate for ESL students. Our school has many clubs and organizations that are primarily student lead. These kids are amazingly motivated despite not having access to all of the same opportunities that may be available in a more affluent area.
My Project
High school is meant to prepare students for further education. Often times that means going to a college or university. In order to provide my students with experiences that will prepare and inspire them for university, we need to have the technology and resources to do that. Students in my classes learn about DNA sequencing, genetic engineering and other applications of biotechnology, but only conceptually.
Biotechnology opportunities in high schools are becoming more and more commonplace, but are still out of reach for students in urban limited income areas.
Giving all students the ability to explore the possibilities of more hands-on STEM experience, like learning lab techniques with micro pipets and using gel electrophoresis for DNA sequencing, will allow them to see the world in ways they never could before. Bringing new technology into the classroom will bridge the gap between what my students learn from a book, and what they experience with their hands. This opportunity will inspire them to reach further and visualize possibilities that had never existed for their future.
