We are a typical, Title One, 5th grade classroom. We have a diverse population and range of abilities. The goal of our school is to see each student progress at least one year of growth. I need resources that are readily available and meet the needs of the common core to teach to all abilities.
I have a very obedient hard working class.
They are talkative, but eager to learn. We are working hard on becoming a community that cares for each of it's members and it is wonderful to see everyone feel safe within our four walls. The students are struggling in their ability to synthesize, analyze and make connections in their reading. It's hard for them to go from one genre to another and make connections. They struggle with writing, it has become more of a focus since the common core and they need to be have many opportunities to write effectively.
My Project
I see these students having these Storyworks magazines at their finger tips and reading the variety of genres included. They will use the texts to compare genres, synthesize, connect, work on character profiles, learn vocabulary relevant to 5th grade and do reader's theaters, one of my favorite things to do. I see this as something that students will see as a prized possession. We give them things to use, but never to have. I bet some of them will have them for years to come and they may even fall into the hands of siblings.
These magazines will make a difference for the students by providing them with a source to use and learn more efficiently in reading.
These will improve their reading and writing skills in a way I have not used before. The tasks provided align to the common core which is new to me so I can use one source to meet many needs in my teaching.
