Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth year reading recovery teacher at a NYC Title 1 school in the South Bronx. I work with the lowest level of children within the first grade. Approximately 97% of the students in the school receive free lunch.
I am requesting a donation of art supplies for my first graders. I would like to incorporate art into the reading curriculum. I have noticed how the students' eyes light up at the chance to be creative. My students do not have any special art-based classes, like music or art, and they greatly enjoy the opportunity to make art since they so rarely get a chance to be creative. First grade is mostly geared toward learning to read, so art is a perfect stress-free outlet for them. At the same time, I want to incorporate it into the curriculum, so ultimately, the art projects will be literacy-based.
Art enables students who are not as strong academically to find their niche or something they can do well. Art will also provide my kids with a chance to release their stress and just be children -- something that is not afforded very often in their environment. Your donation will help to purchase paper, fabric, mirrors, rhinestones, and other materials that we will use in all kinds of projects throughout the first grade classes.
