This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Artistic expression can take many forms, including the use of dolls to role play thoughts, artistic ideas, and imagination. Students with disabilities need a wide range of therapeutic approaches to help them cope with stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Children have a difficult time communicating their painful experiences, coping with repressed feelings, and communicating appropriately. They need an outlet that uses their imagination and allows them to re-enact some of their internalized frustration.
The art of role playing is a crucial strategy that facilitates artistic creativity and promotes cognitive development.
Research shows that "cuddly dolls go beyond the ordinary, providing children with a soothing and sensory deep pressure experience they won't be able to get enough of." During my counseling sessions, I noticed how students like to use one of the teddy bears to cuddle and sooth themselves. It was eye opening how this toy is sought after by students in distress.
After this observation I started to research how therapeutic dolls can play a HUGE role in helping students with disabilities cope with their emotions. This project will provide students with therapeutic dolls and accessories to use during our counseling sessions. These resources will facilitate doll dramatization to safely express their social emotional needs. Artistic outlets like this one will help with reducing anxiety, promote attention to tasks, and assist with on-task behavior.
