This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are full of creative energy and imagination! Our class is abuzz with excited chatter during project work time and silent with steely focus while writing or researching on our Chromebooks. It is my mission to harness all that buzzy interest and direct it into innovative ways to build their understanding of the content.
A handful of statistics can't capture the hearts of these kids but let me share with you some insights to make their need clearer.
My students are a diverse mix of Latino, Filipino and African American children. Our neighborhood is high poverty so 100% of the students receive free lunch. For a few, the school meals are the most reliable source of nutrition they have.
Their reading skills range from those working on still blending letter sounds to those writing essays on theme in the current novel we are reading. Over half of the kids come from homes where English isn't the native language, yet all of my students have reclassified as proficient in English, some just within the last school year. A few of them are identified as gifted, but every one of them is uniquely talented.
My Project
My students love stories and are motivated storytellers. They create stories using a variety of different media. They enjoy producing their own books and graphic novels. They ventured into animation and movies last year with great enthusiasm.
These projects give my students the opportunity to build their creativity and work cooperatively, but we constantly face the challenge of sharing their work with others that we cannot easily meet.
A laser printer in the classroom would help us overcome this hurdle to our collaborative process. We need a printer to print out scripts for the students’ movies so that everyone can learn their parts. We need a way to publish their books for sharing in our school library so that their writing becomes more than a journal written because the teacher said so. We need a copier to reproduce their panels for their graphic novels. Last year I took student work home to print out on my personal printer to help bring our words to life, but there would frequently be students who needed to make changes or who needed something right away for a project. Having this printer at hand will help us really unleash the power of our words!
