This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
English learners face countless barriers when they enter a public school. Once they enroll—some with less than 12 months of being in the country—they have very little time to adjust to the classroom culture, expectations, and language development that many other students have already benefited from.
Having a language translator device will give me the chance to build rapport and provide a safe learning environment for them to come into.
It is frustrating when I am unable to communicate directly with students and parents due to a language barrier. I can see the benefit of this device in helping during parent-teacher conferences as well as resolving student conflicts. I also would like to employ this device during community circles to create a more inclusive environment for students who may have difficulty communicating in English.
I would also like to make my classroom a fun and engaging place to learn math. I find that I am constantly fighting for their attention in class. These days, I am losing against social media, cell phones, and gossip. I'm including these other materials to help break the monotony of class. I am using some of these tools as rewards, for classroom competition, and to give students a choice.
Teaching can be a daily grind, trying to keep 30+ students engaged for 50 minutes, but it is incredibly rewarding when you see the lightbulb go on—and it just takes one!
