National Music Standard number nine is "Understanding music in relation to history and Culture." This year I have really enjoyed teaching some of the multi-cultural songs in our text. We even have good recording where the children can hear natives singing in different languages and hear ethnic instruments being played. There is a large number of ethnic instruments the children could learn to play for themselves but the school does not have many. We have a guiro and a few others, but that's all. I would like to add more multi-cultural instruments to our school collection. Playing these unique cultural instruments would add a strong sense of "reality show' to my cultural music lessons.
