Uniting Us with Culturally Responsive Curriculum

Help me give my students inspiring culturally responsive reading materials! I want to provide rich literature with black and brown characters who triumphed and are leaders in the fight for equality for black and brown people.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are special because they come from diverse backgrounds and their parents work really hard to make ends meet. They want the best for their children and support a high quality education. However, students often arrive at school without the necessary supplies for class. Other scenarios are that they have severe anger management or attention deficits that go unattended. Lastly, we do not have adequate technology to support remote learning due to the Covid pandemic. Our system simply cannot afford costly textbooks or literacy materials to support the Common Core standards, or the staff support services to meet students' needs.

The district cannot afford to supply classrooms or schools with any of the "extras" that help create an engaging environment.

My students love to learn and are very proud when they accomplish great tasks. However, many of them suffer from attention deficits or lack impulse control, creating the need for detailed behavior plans and creating disengagement from classroom protocol. In this grade level, 31% of the students are receiving special education services. These students need sensory and academic supports to help them engage with school.

My Project

These materials will make a tremendous difference in my children's lives by providing inspiring and highly successful characters and role models in both the books, the stories they tell, and the authors themselves. Students need to "see themselves" in the books they read. Positive black and brown people or characters, such as the black female scientists in "Hidden Figures" or Senator John Lewis, can show children that they can and should believe in themselves and accomplish their dreams. Having a productive, happy future in an equitable, fair world can become a reality for all of us if we provide children with rich learning based on the true and positive accomplishments of so may positive black and brown role models. My students particularly need to see that this is highly possible for themselves, given the challenges and struggles they and their families face.
