My special education elementary classroom is made up of 5 year old to 10 year old students. The added level of difficulty of having a child is greatly increased when they have special needs. Many families are constantly on the go taking their child to and from services.
My students' special needs include Autism, Down Syndrome, and developmental delays.
Each student has individual plans to address their specific needs and behaviors. My students' behaviors and goals are constantly changing which requires many different tools, materials, and assessments.
My Project
My students need the Apple iPad to enhance their learning through technology. The iPad provides many applications that I could not provide in class. The Techtronics alphabet and numbers go with an application that merges hands on manipulatives with modern day technology. For those students who lack motivation, often technology can be the key. With the use of the iPad, less materials are needed to be stored and managed. The durable iPad case is a necessity due to the severity of my students needs, behaviors, and physical limitations.
It is very difficult for students to learn when their bodies are constantly going and they don't have the right motivators.
The Stretch Fidget toys are easy and discrete for students to manipulate during lessons which increases their focus. This, along with the moon sand, are often great motivators as well as providing the sensory input they might lack. Due to my students special needs, we often have to find various routes to teach and simple items like the Squiggle Wiggle Writer can be what a student needs!
My students have a more difficult time than the average student doing everyday tasks. It takes many more manipulatives and overall teaching strategies to meet each of their needs. Often, due to their delays items need to be concrete for my students to gain their best understanding of the concept.
