This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every parent looks forward to the day when their child can come home and say "Look what I did in school today Mommy!" This unfortunately doesn't happen for the majority of my students. A simple math assignment requires more than just a book, pencil and paper.
My class is a self-contained 4th and 5th grade autistic class.
All of my students are on a modified curriculum; this means that when they graduate from high school they will receive a special diploma as compared to a general high school diploma. They attend a public school in one of the largest school districts in the country. They attend events with the general education population and are involved with activities that most students would do. Their needs vary from being able to work independently to needing that one-on-one instruction throughout the day. The one thing that they do all have in common is their need for visual support. This unfortunately is not provided through the typical school products provided to average kids.
My Project
If this paper and toner are provided for my students it will allow them to fully access THEIR curriculum in a way that would be quite beneficial to them. Their curriculum involves a high volume of printing because as I mentioned earlier they do not use state mandated textbooks. Every lesson is printed for them, some 3 or 4 times a month. There is maybe 200+ pages, times that by 8 students, this equals a lot of paper that we go through in just a month's time.
Each lesson is geared towards the needs of the student. If the student requires more visual support and is not able to read, they are given pictures to choose from. For example, after reading a story, the students must be able to recall what happened. This particular group of kid has 5 pages for 5 questions. In all that's a LOT of paper. Plus it is also printed in my class on my laser jet.
Donations would impact the room in a huge way.
We are supposed to be able to start teaching as soon as we return, yet some parents just can't make it to the store and purchase the required materials. Paper is expensive, along with copy toner. Having this material on hand would allow for the success of my students, who are an AMAZING and FABULOUS bunch of students. I am just trying to make sure they make the most of their education.
