Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are vibrant young men and women who believe that they can change the world with the voices and actions, specifically through a solid education background. Students are generally from low to middle income families. They are a mixed group of students bridging many racial and ethnic backgrounds. We have a large population of students who are new to the country, whether displaced by the hurricanes in Puerto Rico or refugees from other war-torn countries.
Students in our schools range from Pre-K to grade 8.
We have a variety of learning levels and try our best to meet the needs of all our students, even though we often have limited funding. Students are generally excited to learn through hands-on activities and new experiences. Though language barriers are often a struggle, our students persevere through them and communicate appropriately when given the right tools.
Our students care about our community very much. They have been involved in several fund-raising and donation projects this year to help those less fortunate. They are learning to give back even when we don't have a lot. As a community we are striving to become stronger - a force of change within our own community.
My Project
Our middle school is in need of extra uniform pants. We are asking for help to procure khaki pants for students of all sizes so that students can focus on their work and not on being able to afford uniforms. We have many families that are struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis. Students are coming in without uniform pants, with ripped or damaged clothing, and with dirty clothing. We are trying to make their school experience focused on the learning, rather than being concerned with how they look or if they are embarrassed by ill-fitting clothing.
