Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a school social worker and uniforms are mandatory for our students. Research has found that the use of school uniforms enhances school safety, improves the learning environment, reduces ethnic and racial tensions, bridges socioeconomic differences between children, promotes good behavior, improves children’s self-respect and self-esteem.

I work with our students whose families are experiencing homelessness and our foster youth.

It seems with the cost of living being so high in CA, I am getting more and more families who are unable to afford rent and end up experiencing homelessness. The number of students I have who are homeless has tripled since the pandemic. Many of these families are not able to afford to buy the required uniforms. We do have loaners, which are hand me downs, but we have started to run out. Parents can sign a uniform waiver, so kids don’t have to wear the uniform, but they often feel like they don’t fit in. These students are already experiencing hardship and it’s important that they don’t feel singled out for being out of uniform. Please help be help them feel more comfortable and accepted at school by being able to wear the school uniform.
