This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach third grade in a primarily immigrant and working-class neighborhood in southern California. My students are hard workers who are motivated to reach their goals. For example, our school has both the ST Math program and the Accelerated Reader program which motivate my students to improve in math and reading.

Most of my students are learning English as a second language.

A couple of them are receiving special education, speech and intervention services. All of them love to learn.

My Project

For the last three years my students have been able to participate in the UNICEF Kid Power Band program. These bands are activity trackers, similar to Fitbits, which keep track of a student's daily number of steps. But what makes these bands different from Fitbits and other pedometers is that my students are actually saving the lives of malnourished children all over the world with every step they take. As my students rack up the steps, Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) packets are unlocked and given to children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. The more steps my students take, the more lives they are able to save. A course of 150 RUTF packets given to a child over a 30-day span can reverse the effects of malnutrition.

I am requesting a class set of UNICEF Kid Power Bands so that all my students can get active and save lives.

I am also requesting two copies each of three different book titles. All three titles are the latest in various book series that my students thoroughly enjoy. I love being able to provide them with these just-released books. Thank you.
