Understanding Unseen Genes

My students need hands-on, visual models and lab aids to better understand DNA, cells, and heredity.

My Students

Genetics is one of the hardest subjects to gasp, especially when you cannot actually see DNA or genes that make us who we are. With hands-on visual aids, my students can gain a better understanding of genetics.

My students live in a small, rural town in which a great deal of them are from low income families.

With all the technology out there today, school is the main place in which many of them can use this technology. Our school has limited resources but we try to make the most out of what we have. Most of my students are extremely excited about science when we use hands-on approaches to the subject at hand. Many students are visual learners, and I know they will be able to better comprehend difficult subject matter when the lessons "Come Alive."

My Project

I have requested Genetic Concepts Kits, DNA K'Nex model kits, pedigree magnet boards for learning pedigrees, and genome kits that will allow students to understand their family genomes. If you are one who learns best by seeing and getting your hands on something, then you know just how beneficial lab activity sets are in the science classroom. Genetics is a very difficult subject to grasp, especially for 8th graders. With the new Common Core Standards in place, we as educators must increase the rigor and challenge our students more than ever. My greatest desire is for my students to walk out of my room each day feeling empowered because they "got something" amazing out of the lesson. In order to create the "wow factor" or the "ah ha moment," they must be able to put their hands on it, play with it, manipulate it, and problem solve. They cannot do that with textbooks! Please help make their futures brighter because you helped aid their learning by making the material come alive!

Your donations will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.

I know this because of the donations we received last year. Astronomy was not boring for them at all because of the equipment donated to help them visualize the subject matter better. I hope with your donations this year, we can make the study of genetics easier than ever. With just a textbook, my students have an extremely difficult time grasping it. Please help make science exciting again. Thanks so much!
